Green Tea and Anti-Aging: All Hype or the Next Big Thing?

Green tea and its skin benefits have been everywhere recently – from Marie Claire to the New York Times to Dr. Oz – and is being touted as the latest and greatest ingredient that can help reduce sun damage and revitalize aging skin. But is this just a passing fad or a serious player in anti-aging skin care?

First, lets look at the claims:

  • The Benefits of Drinking Green Tea: Provides protection from cancer, heart disease and dementia, increases weight loss, improves physical stamina, lowers blood pressure, enhances protection from sun damage and increases survival rates for ovarian cancer.
  • The Benefits of Green Tea in Skin Care: Repairs sun damaged skin, neutralizes UV light, prevents skin cancer, rejuvenates skin cells, reduces inflammation, improves psoriasis, soothes acne and lightens pigmentation.

Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it is true.  Believe it or not, every claim above has been validated in a clinical study (to read more on green tea clinical studies, click here).

So what makes green tea so great? It’s one of nature’s best and most powerful antioxidants. Its antioxidant benefits come from something called ‘catechins’ which are more potent free radical scavengers than either vitamin E or vitamin C. The most important of the catechins in green tea is EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate) and it is this that experts believe is responsible for most of its anti aging health benefits.

That means if you care about looking younger you should be both drinking green tea every single day (2-3 cups a day) and using skin care products that contain green tea (like our anti-aging Green Tea Serum). I’ve been doing this for about 6 months and i’ve seen a notable improvement in my skin.
