How to Prevent Sleep Wrinkles

For years doctors and estheticians have warned of sleep wrinkles. Sleep wrinkles are wrinkles that are caused or worsened by sleeping on your side 6-8 hours a night, every night over many years. When your face is pressed against a cotton pillow for hours at a time, it wears down the elastin on your face and the wrinkles formed press into your skin can become permanent over time.

Beyond sleep wrinkles, sleeping on your side also exposes your skin to the bacteria, dirt and grime that is living on your pillow case. Even if your pillow case is clean, it has chemical residue from your washing detergent, which can also be irritating to the skin and cause redness and breakouts.

So, what can you do?

The most common advice is to sleep on your back to avoid sleep wrinkles. The problem with this is that if you are used to sleeping on your side for many years, learning to sleep on your back can be uncomfortable, unnatural and difficult (see: old dogs, new tricks). Personally, my biggest issue with sleeping on my back is that I like to cuddle my pillow at night, something impossible to do while sleeping on your back.

  1. Many people do not realize what sleeping on their faces can do to them. If they do, they would stop sleeping on regular pillows tonight. Vasseur pillow doesn’t crush the skin and skin creams stay on the skin. If you don’t have one of these pillows, get one.
