Amazing Beauty Uses For Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Here at Vasseur we are crazy about Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). We not only use it for cooking, but for a number of other beauty applications –from removing makeup to repairing damaged hair. We think you will be surprised to learn all the ways EVOO can be used to enhance your beauty routine.

First, what makes EVOO so great anyway?

Olive Oil has two main health benefits:

  • Digestion/Healthy Fats: Though one tablespoon of olive oil contains 120 calories and 14 grams of fat– the fat is mostly monounsaturated and actually has a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels, and is easily digested. In those countries where olive oil is consumed extensively, such as Greece, Italy and Spain, there is a markedly lower incidence of cardiovascular diseases. The mild vegetable mucilage in olive oil protects the body’s digestive tract.
  • Antioxidants: Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, which help protect the body from harmful molecules called “free radicals,” which may accelerate the aging process and contribute to the onset of several diseases, such as heart disease and cancer.

Do you need to use Extra Virgin?

Yes- Because extra virgin olive oil is unrefined and cold pressed from its first pressing.  By not using heat it conserves all the nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins, something that can’t be said about any refined oil –including plain olive oil. In general – the greener the color of the olive oil, the more nutrient dense. Note –this is also the philosophy we have at Vasseur with our skin care products, we don’t use any heat processing to preserve the potency of the active ingredients.

Fun fact: Did you know that olive oil was used by ancient civilizations as a perfume, shampoo and medicinal cure for sore muscles and ear infections for years before it was ever used for cooking?

Beauty Uses for Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Chapped Lips. Put a dab of EVOO on your lips for instant, natural chapped lip relief. And, because it’s edible and doesn’t contain mineral oil like most chap sticks, it’s much safer. (In fact, our fabulous, all-natural Beauty Balm has an Olive Oil base!)

Cleanser/ Make Up Remover. Olive oil is a gentle, yet highly effective make-up remover and cleanser. It’s also an incredible moisturizer. This is why our Olive Oil Cleanser is extremely effective in removing dirt, makeup and grime, and also leaves your skin soft and hydrated.

Shaving. Slather some olive oil on your legs for a great shaving cream alternative. Your legs will be so soft and moisturized that you can skip the body lotion after your shower.

Hair Mask. Heat up two tablespoons of EVOO and apply to dry hair – leave on for 20 minutes or overnight and rinse thoroughly with cool water – your hair will look and feel like silk (I do this every two weeks).

Fingernail/Cuticle Treatment. To help build strong fingernails and soften cuticles, soak your nails each night in a mixture of 3 parts lukewarm olive oil to 1 part freshly-squeezed lemon juice. Put on cloth gloves and let the oil penetrate overnight. Your nails will gradually become more resistant to breaking and chipping.

Post Sun Treatment. Studies on mice showed that application of olive oil onto the skin immediately following exposure to UVB rays has a preventive effect on the formation of tumors and skin cancer. So apply some olive oil to your skin after sun exposure for protection from damage.

Also, be aware that heat, light and air can affect both the taste and health-promoting nutrients in EVOO. Store your olive oil in a dark, room-temperature cupboard, or even in the refrigerator. The fats and healthy phytonutrients in olive oil can slowly degrade over time so it’s best to use it within six months to a year once opened.

Tip- because we use so much EVOO, we like to buy ours in bulk and keep it in the fridge.

  1. […] Step 3 –Use the right protection. In case you have not read my post on mineral oil – it’s the most common ingredient in chapstick and is NOT something you want to use. It’s a by-product of gasoline production, toxic and not safe to eat. But, you don’t eat chapstick so what’s the problem? Well, actually…you do. On average we consume about 25% of our chapstick every time we put it on. So, go for something all natural. I swear by our Beauty Balm which has an olive oil, honey and soy wax base and is not only effective, but completely safe. After my experience on Friday, I will never leave home without my Beauty Balm again. Another good option if you’re in a pinch is to just use some extra virgin olive oil directly on your lips (see more beauty uses for Extra Virgin Olive Oil here). […]

  10. I decided that I wentad the first 12 hours without any visitors. Afterall my LO doesn’t even know me face to face yet so I wentad to get acquainted with her prior to having people come and hold her all the time. So after the first day our family’s came and we had a few friends visit. I had a c-section and got discharged early (thank goodness, I wentad to be home!) so we had the majority of our visitor’s the following weekend and week. I was glad I decided to space it out…it can be super overwhelming with that many people.
