I have alluded to the fact that the first 6 weeks with Carter were the hardest of my life but I’ve never shared why. Well, besides recovering from a traumatic birth (3rd degree tearing, could barely walk or use the bathroom), having major breastfeeding issues and battling severe bronchitis (the entire family was sick including Carter at 4 days old) MY BABY WOULD NOT SLEEP!
I had always heard that newborns slept most of the day and would just wake up to eat. Well, this was most definitely not the case with Carter. He was awake crying – actually, crying is not accurate – he was wailing / screaming bloody murder all day and night. At one point I was so desperate that in the middle of the night I ordered the $1,200 “magic” SNOO crib that is supposed to put ANY baby to sleep. Yes, you read that right, a ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLAR CRIB! (It didn’t work. In fact, it just made him angrier! Thankfully they have a good return policy)
I wanted to start with this so that anyone reading this who is pregnant or currently going through a hard time knows that THINGS. GET. BETTER. (I’m also giving you a virtual hug).
In fact, in some ways I’m glad that things were so hard in the beginning because I really appreciate how good things are now and I never take it for granted.
So back to the sleep.
My #1 mistake as a new mom was assuming that babies sleep when they’re tired or that you can just put baby down and they will fall asleep.
Many babies fight sleep so you have to make sure it happens. I eventually found a magic formula that worked (every time, with zero crying) and it’s below in detail. Every step had to be exact or it didn’t work.
Disclaimer: This is just what worked for my baby so I can’t guarantee it will work for any other baby. Carter was an extreme case so I feel like if it worked for him it would likely work for others. The method I’m sharing below is for newborns 0-3 months. At the end I will share what I’m doing now that he’s 6 months old.
Okay, enough background. Here it is
HOW TO GET ANY NEWBORN TO NAP – MY MAGIC FORMULA

Hi guys! So many of you ask me for baby product recommendations so I wanted to put everything in one running list for easy reference. This is not just a list of all of Carter’s things- these are the top products and toys that I swear by and will either keep or purchase again for my future baby/babies. As a first time mom I had no clue where to start and was totally overwhelmed so I hope this list can help some of you!
***This is the complete list for 0-6 months old (final updates made 7/11/17). I will be making a part two for 7-12 months***

SLEEP RELATED PRODUCTS
Newborn Swaddle: The ONLY swaddle Carter couldn’t get out of. I tried 5 or 6 other types before I finally found this one! (zip up, arms down, 0-3 months) http://amzn.to/2rzKJev
Swaddle 2: Also zip up but allows baby to have arms in an up position. As Carter got older he wanted more movement with his hands and preferred this swaddle (zip up, arms up, 2-3 months) http://amzn.to/2r4rplP
Arm swaddle: This swaddle allows baby to be swaddled while strapped into a swing or rock and play (0-3 months) http://amzn.to/2sRoZbJ
Swing: This swing saved my life in the early days– I could write an entire blog post on why I love this. Read my blog post on baby sleep for why this is so amazing if you have a baby who is fussy and/or won’t nap http://amzn.to/2seFfH3
Crib soother: Now that Carter naps in his crib this hangs on the side and lights up and plays soft music that gradually fades. This thing is incredible, my current #1 baby product! When I turn it on he knows it’s time to sleep and goes down right away without a fight. I recommend getting this with rechargeable C batteries. http://amzn.to/2sepm3u
Dok a tot: This is where Carter sleeps at night with us in the bed for safe co sleeping. It’s expensive but worth it in my opinion. http://amzn.to/2rTjE6r
*My post all about baby sleep is now up, read it here (this is a must read for anyone struggling with baby napping or sleeping through the night!)
Kick and Play Gym: This was the first toy/activity that Carter really loved, and he still enjoys it now at almost 5 months. This is great for younger babies because they can use their feet and kick before they can grasp/grab (back playtime 0 months+) http://go.magik.ly/ml/5bxq/
- *Now that he’s older and isn’t interested in the play gym anymore I detached the piano part and it’s one of his favorite toys!
Play gym: Neutral colors, soft and plush, good quality (back and tummy time play, 0 months+) http://amzn.to/2s2wZu5
Tummy time water mat: Carter hated tummy time until I got him this. This gives him something to do/look at to distract him from the fact that he’s on his tummy. He started to really get into it around 3 months. Make sure to fill with distilled water to make it last longer (tummy time play, 1 month+) http://amzn.to/2rKrs8r
Exersauser: By far the activity center I love and recommend most is this one. It’s so sleek looking and Carter’s FAVORITE thing. The activites are really engaging and interactive and he’s never bored. (stand up play, 4+ months) http://amzn.to/2r4cLet
Jumper: I prefer this door jumper because it’s inexpensive, takes up FAR less space and Carter can jump in it better. I regret buying a stand alone jumper (stand up play, 4 months+) http://amzn.to/2rzwPJc

I’m 39 weeks pregnant today! I can’t believe I’m so close to the finish line – he could be here any day now!
I’ve been reflecting on my pregnancy journey and wanted to put together a list of all the best things I’ve discovered throughout my pregnancy. Basically, this is the list I wish I had when I first found out I was pregnant and was completely overwhelmed with everything.
Feel free to follow or ignore anything you want – this is just what I personally loved and what worked for me based on my experience. If you have any questions about anything, it’s best to reach me via instagram or twitter @vasseurbeauty
Education/ apps / websites
BOOK: Brain Rules for Baby. I’ve read over 10 baby/pregnancy related books (if you know me, you know that I over research everything) and this is BY FAR the best book I’ve read. I won’t go into all the reasons I love it – we would be here all day – but it starts with pregnancy through your baby’s first 5 years. If I could recommend that you do only one thing from this entire list, it would be to read this book:
BLOG: Great mom blog with lots of pregnancy and baby product recommendations: https://www.lucieslist.com/#
WEBSITE: I randomly found this website that talks about week by week changes during pregnancy and it’s become my favorite to reference http://www.mamamaternity.co.nz/step-by-step-guide/weeks-11-13/
APP: What to Expect. Gives daily updates and articles and a weekly video showing your baby’s development.
*If you read Brain Rules for Baby then you will learn the benefits for each of these supplements. These are the exact ones I take*

My first trimester was pretty rough, I had strong food aversions and could pretty much only eat food that was beige in color (bread, pasta, oatmeal, etc). I wasn’t as concerned about being healthy as I was just surviving. Then in the second trimester, even though my food aversions mostly went away, I still felt terrible and was tired all the time. I found out that I was borderline gestational diabetic and I was forced to completely overhaul my diet. It ended up being the best thing that happened to me during my pregnancy – by doing this I felt 50x better, more energized and a lot less moody. So much so that I am going to stick to this type of low glycemic diet indefinitely because I love how it makes me feel.
The gist of it is
- Eat frequently (every 2-3 hours, set an alarm if you need to)
- Eat protein and a complex carb with EVERY meal and snack
- For protein I typically have eggs, organic/grass fed meats and protein shakes. (I try to eat 70-80g of protein a day)
- Complex carbs I mostly eat are brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potato, black beans & ezekiel bread. (I shoot for 20-30g of carbs with each meal)
- Lots of vegetables
- Healthy fats (peanut butter, avocado, olive oil)
I eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch and snacks daily and for dinner I make a BLue Apron or Sun Basket premade meal kit.
For my daily protein shake I use this organic protein powder (approved by my doctor and super tasty!) http://amzn.to/2iXKLp6
Body and Skin Care
When I became pregnant I had to reevaluate all of the body and skin care products I was using – and very long story short – I switched to natural products but didn’t love anything so I did my own research and created my own line products with the absolute BEST ingredients (my mother is a cosmetic chemist for over 30 years). More about my line & why I created it can be found here
BODY OIL: This is my holy grail product – it’s a 100% organic body oil and is designed to prevent stretch marks. Oils penetrate deeper into the skin and give the most effective hydration – you can read more about the specific oils used and their skin benefits here. I apply this to my belly/hips/thighs about 5x a day and so far have zero stretch marks! https://vasseurskincare.com/collections/body-care/products/glowing-hydration-body-oil
I wanted to create a multi-purpose shower/bath product to keep things simple, so this works as a face, body wash and shaving cream. It’s fortified with six super hydrating, antioxidant-rich natural oils to cleanse gently, but thoroughly while imparting essential moisture to skin. https://vasseurskincare.com/collections/body-care/products/3-in-1-body-wash
BODY LOTION In my research I found that a particular type of shea butter is best for preventing stretch marks. Mine contains whipped organic grade A shea butter and antioxidant-packed organic oils to intensely nourish and moisturize the skin. Also enriched with powerful moisturizing oils (camilla, sea buckthorn, grapeseed): https://vasseurskincare.com/collections/body-care/products/ultra-hydrating-body-lotion

For my skin – this has been tricky. I’ve been dealing with extreme acne throughout my entire pregnancy. It’s completely hormonal (and also genetic – FUN FACT: my mom had such bad acne with me that’s why she created her own skin care company!). This was my first pregnancy symptom and has been the most enduring, though I have mostly got things under control now thankfully.
This is my pregnancy skin care routine (in order applied):
- Foaming Cleanser – pH balanced cleanser https://vasseurskincare.com/products/foaming-cleanser
- Hydrogel – gentle moisturizer https://vasseurskincare.com/products/hydro-gel
- ALA cream – antioxidant that also helps minimize redness and swelling https://vasseurskincare.com/products/ala-cream
- Gold Serum – eye area hydration https://vasseurskincare.com/products/gold-serum
- Foaming Cleanser – pH balanced cleanser https://vasseurskincare.com/products/foaming-cleanser
- Chamomile toner – helps to refresh and kill bacteria on the skin https://vasseurskincare.com/products/chamomile-toner
- Mandelic acid serum – pregnancy safe and gentle AHA helps to disinfect the skin and treat breakouts https://vasseurskincare.com/products/mandelic-acid-serum
- Gold Serum – eye area hydration https://vasseurskincare.com/products/gold-serum
In terms of other natural products I use
Deodorant – The best natural deodorant (I even did a natural deodorant battle on my channel and this was the CLEAR winner). I will continue to use this indefinitely http://amzn.to/2sBY7NF
Toothpaste – http://amzn.to/2iBFEyB
Pregnancy pillow – I started using this around 25 weeks and have come to really love it, it wasn’t comfortable to me at first but switching to a new pillow is always an adjustment http://amzn.to/2irjZsi
Beauty pillow – I use this in SO MANY WAYS – as a sleeping pillow on top of my pregnancy pillow to prevent sleep wrinkles, to prop up my head in bed while I’m reading, behind my back while sitting/working AND the shape fits perfectly around my belly so I use it to prop things on https://vasseurskincare.com/products/beauty-pillow
In terms of wardrobe I talk about my favorite items and show them in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrwSdlbUhuM
Back pain: Around weeks 17-20 I was dealing with severe back pain. I did a ton of research, tried everything including braces, wraps, acupuncture, massage, etc and finally figured it out – my bed was too soft!!! I had been using a down mattress pad on top of my bed (which I loved!) but the day I took it off my pain went away and has never come back.
Pelvic pain: Around week 35 I started having severe pelvic pain – it was excruciating. It got so bad that I was on crutches and couldn’t walk. Ryan even had to carry me to the bathroom!!! I figured out the #1 cause of this was stress (the pain flared up right as I was launching my product line and was working crazy hours). I also started using a warm compress and taking nightly “de-stress” warm baths and the pain has gone away almost completely.

Hey guys! So today I’m talking about a skin care product that I’m particularly excited about – because I actually helped develop it! I may be biased, but it’s my DREAM MASK called Hydroxy Glow. I wanted something hydrating and anti-aging that would give an instant visible glow and smoothness to the skin and I had not found anything that fit this niche. So I begged my mom to come up with something and I’ve been extremely involved in the process – from hand picking out my favorite ingredients to even naming the product! I have been testing different versions since last April – yes that long – I’m probably the pickiest person you’ve ever met and I wanted it to be perfect.
ABOUT THE MASK: Read more
In today’s stimuli-driven consumer world, it’s very tempting to buy skin care products for their fancy packaging, great advertisement, convincing sales rep or big celebrity endorsement (“Jenifer Aniston uses this product, I love Jenifer Aniston!”). But, the key to picking out skin care products comes down to one key factor: what’s INSIDE the bottle – the ingredients – because that’s what will (or will not) produce results for your complexion.
With that in mind, here is a quick guide to becoming an expert in picking out skin care products.
Part 1: Educate yourself — Always buy your skin care products based on the ingredients
Do your research; it’s best to go in to buying a skin care product knowing what active ingredients are proven to address your skin issues and then look for products containing those ingredients. I often write about superstar skin care ingredients on this blog, here are some of the standouts:
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids – exfoliation, acne, pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, overall skin radiance
- Alpha Lipoic Acid – redness, wrinkles, scarring, inflammation and overall skin radiance
- Idebenone – fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture
- DMAE – skin firming
- Vitamin C – wrinkles, sun damage repair, skin texture
- Mandelic Acid – acne, fine lines and wrinkles
- Copper Peptides – skin regeneration, skin firmness, skin healing
- Benzoyl Peroxide – acne
- Green Tea Extract – sun damage repair, intensive antioxidants, wrinkles, skin rejuvenation
Not only should your skin care products contain active ingredients that are proven to be both safe and highly effective, but they should be in high enough concentrations that the ingredient is actually effective (typically in the 3-15% range, depending on the ingredient). One easy way to determine this is ensuring that the active ingredient is near the top of the ingredient list. If it’s towards the end of the list, then it’s only a minor component of the product, and likely not in a high enough concentration to make any impact on your skin.

Would you go months without working out and expect to be in your best shape? Would you gorge on junk food and expect to feel good and healthy? This is also true for achieving beautiful skin. If you don’t maintain it with diligent care, it’s not going to look it’s best. Facials are one of the best ways to achieve a flawless, glowing complexion. Don’t believe me? Well, just ask a Victoria’s Secret Model:
“Facials were a big topic of conversation backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Like big, big. All the Angels are huge on facials. I heard a bunch of the models discussing how important their monthly facials are. And for the record, their skin is perfectly dewy without being oily.” -Blogger Lauryn from ‘The Skinny Confidential’ covering the 2015 Victoria’s Secret fashion show
Here’s exactly how a professional facial benefits your skin:
- Expertise: Through exfoliation, deep-cleansing of the pores, stimulating improved circulation, and use of professional-strength products and equipment, your esthetician can make a lot of progress towards improving your skin in a single session. Much like a personal trainer, she has experience, techniques, products and equipment that cannot be replicated at home.
- Deep and Thorough Cleaning: There are over 20,000 pores on your face alone- these pores are being bombarded with dirt and grime from not one, but two directions. Since your skin is an eliminating organ, toxins from sweat purge from the skin and linger there and external debris (dirt, pollution, bacteria from your hands) also get trapped and lodged into your pores. Not only does this contribute to dull looking, sallow complexion, for those who are acne prone, this bacteria lingering in your skin is the feeding ground for pimples. This is where a facial comes in. Your esthetician will perform extractions to remove the lodged in dirt and grime from your skin. During a facial, the skin is prepped and softened using concentrated steam from distilled water. This breaks up the dirt making it easier to purge. At this point, it needs a little push in order to come out. If it is not pushed out, then some will slough off naturally, but the deepest, most lodged in dirt will remain- this is why extractions are necessary to truly clean the skin. Be careful – if extractions are not performed by a professional they can damage your skin and make the problem worse. Learn more about the benefits of extractions here: Extractions 101.
- Guidance: Finding the right skin care products can be both confusing and expensive. Getting a professional facial cuts down on that mystery and provides you with invaluable guidance. Your esthetician will analyze your skin and then customize the products they use during the facial according to your particular skin type and concerns. Without the training and knowledge of a licensed esthetician, it can be extremely difficult to find the right products for your skin. Your esthetician will be able to recommend the right products for your skin type and in many cases will be able to provide you with samples to test first to ensure your skin agrees with them.
- Stress Relief: The stress of our hectic daily lives shows up in our skin so taking an hour to relax and be pampered will help you out both physically and emotionally. Massage is a big part of a professional facial. It helps you to relax and reduces the stress hormone cortisol. If cortisol is left to run amuck in the body it will only hurt you over time, and additionally massage releases oxytocin, which is one of the body’s main “feel good” hormones.
Facials are often neglected or thought of as an indulgence- something for only a birthday or special occasion. One of the main reasons for this is because of the cost. But ask yourself this – what DO you spend money on? Is it better to have cute shoes that you wear once in a blue moon or beautiful, flawless skin – that you get to wear every single day?!
Nothing about you is more visible than your face- and every single person you come in contact with looks at your skin. You can try to cover it up – but even with foundation you can still see the texture and imperfections hiding underneath. Nothing feels better than the confidence of having clear skin. And you can finally stop your hunt for the perfect foundation – because the best foundation in the world is naturally beautiful skin!
Due to cost and convenience reasons I started doing most of my beauty rituals at home – I do my own hair color + cut, nails and even eyelash extensions – but the one thing I will never, ever give up is my facials.
Today I wanted to spotlight alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and their incredible power to transform the skin. I personally started using an AHA product for the first time about 2 months ago, Reveal 10, and my skin has never looked better in my entire life. My face is so incredibly soft and smooth and the tiny lines that were forming around my eyes have plumped up dramatically. No product I’ve ever put on my face has made such a visible difference in my skin. Seriously.
So here’s everything you need to know about AHAs and how they work:
The most common alpha hydroxyl acids are lactic acid and glycolic acid. These two acids in particular penetrate the skin very well and are often used in skin care products. In addiction, there is a good deal of scientific data on the effectiveness of both acids.
The main benefit of an alpha hydroxy acid is its ability to exfoliate the skin. They essentially remove the “glue” from the upper layer of skin that holds onto the old, dead skin cells. By effectively removing that top layer of skin, the alpha hydroxy acids serve to help new skin grow. Lactic acid primarily exfoliates the top, dead layer of skin while glycolic acid (a smaller molecule) goes deeper into the skin.
Alpha hydroxy acids reduce the look of wrinkles, help to reduce the likelihood that winkles will develop, make skin smoother and (with months of daily use) can help skin that’s uneven and hyper pigmented become smoother and more even.
It’s also believed that in addition to helping new (younger looking and fresh) skin to grow, alpha hydroxy acids also stimulate the growth of elastin and collagen, both of which become depleted with age. (source: Paula’s Choice Skin Ingredient Glossary)
AHAs and Sensitive Skin
The reason I had never tried AHAs until recently is because I have sensitive skin and was afraid it would be too strong or cause a reaction. So I started cautiously with a patch test on the side of my face for a few nights and since I had no averse reaction I began using it on my entire face. It tingled for about 30-60 seconds after applying, which alarmed me at first. I called my mom (a cosmetic chemist) she said any good AHA product should tingle. The ideal pH for an AHA product is between 3 and 4, you will know this is the case if your skin tingles after you apply the product.
Also, to note for those with sensitive skin. Acids don’t work like retinoids, which repair skin by kick-starting inflammation. They dissolve the upper layers of cells to trigger repair. Plus, unlike with scrubs, the skin is not damaged by abrasives. So if you’re sensitive, acids are actually a wise choice. Just be sure to patch test first!
Possible side effects/ Important things to note
AHA products can increase your sensitivity to the sun by as much as 50%, so it’s essential that a good sunscreen is used.
Irritation is another possible side effect of Alpha Hydroxy Acid use. Some of these symptoms might include redness, burning and itching. If the symptoms continue after you have used the product for some time and your skin has had a chance to adapt, try using a product that contains less of the AHA concentration.

Dry skin is especially common in the fall and winter months, when the humidity level outside drops. Here are 5 quick tips to keep your skin healthy and hydrated!
Watch the video above for my tips – details and links below. Enter your email in the top right of this page to be notified of new skin care videos and blog posts!
1 – The #1 ingredient to avoid in your skin care, body care and hair care, especially during dry months is: sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Check your labels!
2 – Sleep with a humidifier.

3 – Take an omega-3 supplement daily – this will help your skin cells stay hydrated from within. Omega-3 fatty acids strengthen your skin’s lipid barrier, which acts like a seal that keeps moisture in. (Consult with your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if pregnant or nursing)

4 – One of the best hydrating ingredients to look for in a moisturizer is Hyaluronic acid – it holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water & is extremely effective.
