Hi all! I have decided to revive my blog so that I have a space to talk to you about things that are on my mind more in-depth. After a lot of thought I’ve decided that this is the best medium for me because on my youtube channel I have this thing where I don’t like to talk too much (I always like to keep things moving and not ramble) so this is a safe space for me that I can express myself more fully and freely.

Today I want to share with you my thoughts on brand deals and the truth about making money on youtube. Why? Because this has been stressing me out lately (you will read why below) and I feel that it’s always best to be fully transparent. YOU, yes you reading this right now, are the reason I am able to do this at all. I am so grateful for you and I always want to be as open and real as possible. If you are new here and don’t know my youtube channel I make home and lifestyle videos (organization, cleaning, home hacks, budgeting etc.).

First, it needs to be said that I never got onto youtube for the money. Yes, I know every youtuber says this- but I can put my money (or lack thereof) where my mouth is. When I started I didn’t even know it was POSSIBLE to make money on youtube and crazy fact: I did not make one single penny off youtube for 3 entire years. I didn’t even have ads turned on my videos because I was worried if people saw them they would click off the video. So, no brand deals, no ads, no affiliate revenue for 3 years. Imagine working on something 30+ hours a week for 3 years and not making a cent. This should tell you where my heart is.

During that time I was able to get by working part-time for my mom’s company Vasseur Skincare doing her customer service and website. I was living paycheck to paycheck and typically would have about $200 dollars in my bank account left over every month. Once my channel started growing and taking up so much more of my time (side note – videos take a lot longer to put together than you would imagine, and I do every single aspect myself) I didn’t think it was fair to keep working for my mom when I didn’t have the time. I decided to focus on youtube and go full time – but that meant I also needed to make money.

Timing-wise, this all corresponded with moving into our home. Now, you may be wondering how we were able to afford this house if I wasn’t making much money. I had some savings but the truth is 80% of the down payment came from Ryan. So all of a sudden we were homeowners with a mortgage, a lot of bills and a house to furnish. This was the point I turned ads on all of my videos (the banner ads and pre-roll ads that run before the video) and I booked my first brand deal with ghostbed mattresses – we needed a new mattress anyway so it was a win-win (I still use and enjoy this mattress to this day!)

Now, a major point that needs to be noted here – as a self-employed person living in the state of California OVER 40% of everything I make goes to taxes, so anything I make basically gets cut in half. I also get zero benefits, paid time off etc. Luckily for me I was able to get on Ryan’s health insurance. Hi guys! So I recently did a total living room makeover and the aspect of the room that needed the most help, by far, was my window coverings. The blinds didn’t open all the way and the curtains were the wrong length and falling down.  It was a total mess and made the entire room look bad.

One thing I have learned is that when it comes to window coverings, I need to hire a professional. Whenever I try to do it myself, not only does it look bad but it causes me so much frustration in the process (have you ever tried hanging perfectly straight curtain rods, it’s not easy!) 1) Do you follow this on weekends? No, I personally do not follow this on weekends only M-F. If you wanted to, you could also make a second weekend block schedule.

Other advice – give yourself time to get your time blocks right and make modifications. Remember, it’s a new system, give yourself time to learn and adapt

I have alluded to the fact that the first 6 weeks with Carter were the hardest of my life but I’ve never shared why. Well, besides recovering from a traumatic birth (3rd degree tearing, could barely walk or use the bathroom), having major breastfeeding issues and battling severe bronchitis (the entire family was sick including Carter at 4 days old) MY BABY WOULD NOT SLEEP!

I had always heard that newborns slept most of the day and would just wake up to eat. Well, this was most definitely not the case with Carter. He was awake crying – actually, crying is not accurate – he was wailing / screaming bloody murder all day and night. At one point I was so desperate that in the middle of the night I ordered the $1,200 “magic” SNOO crib that is supposed to put ANY baby to sleep. Yes, you read that right, a ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLAR CRIB! (It didn’t work. In fact, it just made him angrier! Thankfully they have a good return policy)

I wanted to start with this so that anyone reading this who is pregnant or currently going through a hard time knows that THINGS. GET. BETTER. (I’m also giving you a virtual hug).

In fact, in some ways I’m glad that things were so hard in the beginning because I really appreciate how good things are now and I never take it for granted.

So back to the sleep.

My #1 mistake as a new mom was assuming that babies sleep when they’re tired or that you can just put baby down and they will fall asleep.

Many babies fight sleep so you have to make sure it happens. I eventually found a magic formula that worked (every time, with zero crying) and it’s below in detail. Every step had to be exact or it didn’t work.

Disclaimer: This is just what worked for my baby so I can’t guarantee it will work for any other baby. Carter was an extreme case so I feel like if it worked for him it would likely work for others. The method I’m sharing below is for newborns 0-3 months. At the end I will share what I’m doing now that he’s 6 months old.

I’m 39 weeks pregnant today! I can’t believe I’m so close to the finish line – he could be here any day now!

Diet

My first trimester was pretty rough, I had strong food aversions and could pretty much only eat food that was beige in color (bread, pasta, oatmeal, etc). I wasn’t as concerned about being healthy as I was just surviving. Then in the second trimester, even though my food aversions mostly went away, I still felt terrible and was tired all the time. I found out that I was borderline gestational diabetic and I was forced to completely overhaul my diet. It ended up being the best thing that happened to me during my pregnancy – by doing this I felt 50x better, more energized and a lot less moody. So much so that I am going to stick to this type of low glycemic diet indefinitely because I love how it makes me feel.

The gist of it is

  • Eat frequently (every 2-3 hours, set an alarm if you need to)
  • Eat protein and a complex carb with EVERY meal and snack
    1. For protein I typically have eggs, organic/grass fed meats and protein shakes. (I try to eat 70-80g of protein a day)
    2. Complex carbs I mostly eat are brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potato, black beans & ezekiel bread. (I shoot for 20-30g of carbs with each meal)
  • Lots of vegetables
  • Healthy fats (peanut butter, avocado, olive oil)

I eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch and snacks daily and for dinner I make a  BLue Apron or Sun Basket premade meal kit.

Body and Skin Care

When I became pregnant I had to reevaluate all of the body and skin care products I was using – and very long story short – I switched to natural products but didn’t love anything so I did my own research and created my own line products with the absolute BEST ingredients (my mother is a cosmetic chemist for over 30 years). SKIN CARE

For my skin – this has been tricky. I’ve been dealing with extreme acne throughout my entire pregnancy. It’s completely hormonal (and also genetic – FUN FACT: my mom had such bad acne with me that’s why she created her own skin care company!). This was my first pregnancy symptom and has been the most enduring, though I have mostly got things under control now thankfully.

Discomforts

Back pain: Around weeks 17-20 I was dealing with severe back pain. I did a ton of research, tried everything including braces, wraps, acupuncture, massage, etc and finally figured it out – my bed was too soft!!! I had been using a down mattress pad on top of my bed (which I loved!) but the day I took it off my pain went away and has never come back.

Pelvic pain: Around week 35 I started having severe pelvic pain – it was excruciating. It got so bad that I was on crutches and couldn’t walk. Ryan even had to carry me to the bathroom!!! I figured out the #1 cause of this was stress (the pain flared up right as I was launching my product line and was working crazy hours). I also started using a warm compress and taking nightly “de-stress” warm baths and the pain has gone away almost completely.

In today’s stimuli-driven consumer world, it’s very tempting to buy skin care products for their fancy packaging, great advertisement, convincing sales rep or big celebrity endorsement (“Jenifer Aniston uses this product, I love Jenifer Aniston!”). But, the key to picking out skin care products comes down to one key factor: what’s INSIDE the bottle – the ingredients – because that’s what will (or will not) produce results for your complexion.

With that in mind, here is a quick guide to becoming an expert in picking out skin care products.

Part  1: Educate yourself — Always buy your skin care products based on the ingredients

Do your research; it’s best to go in to buying a skin care product knowing what active ingredients are proven to address your skin issues and then look for products containing those ingredients. I often write about superstar skin care ingredients on this blog, here are some of the standouts:

Not only should your skin care products contain active ingredients that are proven to be both safe and highly effective, but they should be in high enough concentrations that the ingredient is actually effective (typically in the 3-15% range, depending on the ingredient). One easy way to determine this is ensuring that the active ingredient is near the top of the ingredient list. If it’s towards the end of the list, then it’s only a minor component of the product, and likely not in a high enough concentration to make any impact on your skin.
