Understanding the most common factors that may be causing your breakouts is the first and most critical step to targeting your acne at its source, and thus combating it for good. Based on my 30+ years of experience, here are the top 10 most common causes of acne breakouts:
Acne Factor #1: Touching Your Face
This may come as a surprise, but subconsciously touching your face all day makes it quickly become the dirtiest part of your body. This is something most of us do without even being aware of it, and is the common cause of breakout around your chin and jawline. Make a conscious effort to not touch your face during the day. Also, be sure to clean your cell phone often or use an ear piece (recommended), as holding your cell phone to your face can also be causing bacteria to spread and giving you breakouts on your cheeks.
Acne Factor #2: Dairy and Sugar Consumption
If you are devolping breakouts on your chin, jaw line and neck area, it might be a sign that you’re getting more dairy or sugar in your diet than your body can tolerate. Your skin acts as an excretory system to get rid of things that your body is not in agreement with, so when you get too much dairy or sugar, it is by nature harder to digest and can come out in the form of cystic blemishes in the lower area of the face. Acne Factor #3: Stress
Stress has been proven in clinical studies to worsen the overall skin condition. This is because stress induces the adrenal glands into overproduction of cortisol, a steroid, which in turn makes sebaceous glands produce more oil and make skin extra oily. Thus the reason why in stressful periods, people experiencing an increase in acne get more inflamed, puss-filled papules than simple whiteheads or blackheads. To control stress, try simple breathing techniques, taking breaks during the day or practicing yoga or meditation.
Acne Factor #4: Not Washing Your Face
Oil on the skin makes for a breeding ground of bacteria, and bacteria will cause blemishes. Sleeping with not only your makeup on, but also the addition of oil, dirt and debris that has built up on the skin during the day, can absolutely trigger new blemishes. Here’s how to wash your face properly:
- Wash your hands and apply a quarter size dollop of facial cleanser to your palm (we recommend our Olive Oil Cleanser for anti-aging or our Foaming Cleanser for acne prone/oily skin). Work the cleanser into your skin in gentle circular motions and then lean over the sink and splash lukewarm water on your face 8-10 times to completely cleanse the skin. Then pat the skin dry with a washcloth. DO NOT wash your face by applying face wash to a towel and rubbing it on your face. Not only does this irritate your skin, it does not fully clean it and can actually make matters worse.
Acne Factor #5: Using New Skin Care Products
When your skin is introduced to new products, sometimes you might get some initial blemish purging, especially if the products are giving your skin more exfoliation than normal. If it continues on more than two weeks, then they may not be a good fit for your skin or may contain ingredients that are actually causing you to break out. Acne Factor #6: Hormones
Many women can experience a surge of blemishes leading up to their monthly cycle and mid cycle during ovulation due to hormone fluctuations in the body. This is completely normal, but can be very frustrating. If you are female with cyclical breakouts that tend to flare up the week before and two weeks after your menstrual cycle, consider taking an estrogen dominant birth control pill (such as Yasmin) in order to even out your body’s hormones. I have found in females, switching to an estrogen dominant birth control pill is one of the easiest, fastest ways to clear the skin. (WARNING: do not take a progesterone dominant birth control pill, as it will likely make your skin worse). Learn more about birth using birth control to manage acne.
Acne Factor #7: Menopause
Hormones are chemical messengers, created by our bodies to regulate everything from metabolism to cell growth to reproductive cycles and mood. When they fluctuate, they can trigger weight gain, depression, sleeplessness and fatigue in addition to adult acne and breakouts.
Acne Factor #8: Air Travel
The cabins of airplanes have extremely low humidity, which cause the skin to get extremely dehydrated (lack of water). The dry air looks for moisture where it can get it and that means robbing it right from your skin! The dehydrated cells cause a buildup, which can trap oil underneath the skin resulting in post-flight breakouts. READ: Skin Tips for Your Flight
Acne Factor #9: Weather Changes
When the season is changing and the weather is warm one day and cold the next, it can wreak havoc on the skin, leaving it confused, unbalanced, and prone to blemishes. If the air is dryer than normal, moisturize with a highly emollient cream based moisturizer, if the air is cold or windy, use a skin protecting serum and if its hot and humid, use a high potency, mineral-based sunscreen.
Acne Factor #10: Medications
Every drug will affect the body differently, but generally speaking, medications and drug use can cause stress on the nervous system, which elevates hormones (adrenals). This will contribute to the wear and tear of connective tissue resulting in flaccid, loose, sagging skin as well as increased blemishes.

Hi there, we will be writing a separate post on this next week because it is an important topic. In sum: Most birth control pills have the hormones estrogen and progesterone in them. Estrogen is anti-androgenic, while progesterone has varying levels of androgenicity. A rule of thumb is, if the estrogen content is high enough to counter the androgens, you will see some improvement in your acne. If the estrogen isn’t strong enough to offset the androgenic activity (which stimulates oil production in the skin), then your acne may actually worsen. Birth control pills containing this high androgenic/low estrogenic pattern include:
Alesse
Estrostep FE
Levlen
Loestrin 1.5/30
Loestrin 1/20 Fe
Ovral
I was actually deliberately put on low estrogen birth control pills to combat my acne (Lostrien 1.5/30). No wonder I thought my acne was getting worse and stoppoed the pills!

Hi my name is jessica. I have acne on my checks, forehead and a bit on my chin. What I do is wash my face with ( dove ) soap. Then I get 3 ice cubes and then one at a time I put it on my face it works really well. And also try not to get stressed out. Try and get somewhere cold. Eat veggies, fruits and drink lots of water don’t have lots of dairy like milk, icecream, butter or stuff like that or don’t have chocolate just try all that and try and stay happy if any side effects tell me 🙂

I swer I feel the same way but you are your worse critic, no ones perfect everyone gets breakouts here and there. Sure I envy those people with smooth clear skin but acene is temporary the pyscological stress you’re putting on yourself will be permanent, love yourself everyway wake up and practice accepting yourself the acene will clear dont let the insecurity and fear stay. I disagree with your other reply from Anonymous. Restricting certain foods does not help with acne. Many people just stress out about what foods they can’t eat. I’m sure you know stress can also effect acne.
Hello Alexander, your email totally broke my heart. I am in my forties now, but suffered with acne so bad in my twenties and some in my thirties. I would cry and try not to be out in public much if I had a breakout. I would try and cover it up with makeup, which would make it worse. As I look back now, I know what caused it. I was so lucky because I had the help of a fantastic Naturopathic Doctor. Diet is so important, more than what you are putting on your face. Biggest thing is the modern day milk and milk products that we drink. If you can get organic milk and products great, other wise don’t drink it or eat it and see how your skin goes. Anything that may have hormones in it will mess with your skin. Try Desert Essence Tea Tree face wash. I have been using it for 15 years and could not live without it. It helps keep acne under control. It will kill bacteria on your face. it is drying so if you put cream on your face, be very careful. Believe it or not a tiny lit bit of olive oil will work. I thought it was such an odd place, especially because I am always careful to wash my neck well. But the too much dairy thing makes COMPLETE sense. I’m 15 years old and I’ve always had acne but lately it’s getting a lot worse. I don’t know what to do and I’m too embarrassed to go to school. I’m so stressed too so I assume that’s a cause of acne, I have oily skin but I’m using this cleanser that takes away a lot of the oil on my face. I live in Canada so right now it’s soo cold outside (winter) so I guess that’s something else. I just want to know if I should keep using face cleansers or ask my mom for birth control or ask for that pill for acne (not birth control) I just don’t know what to so with my face anymore 😥

I am a white 40 yr old female and I have breakouts on my face……its ugly and it hurts….I never had acne in school and this did not start til I was around 30 and got REALLY bad in SEPT., 2008 when I got clean and sober and have been since …only by the GRACE of GOD! I’m currently experiencing a breakout and its terrible. I’m literally waking up to a new zit everyday. But I don’t know what has caused it. Could it be the new toner I’m using (Olay skin adapt cause I have combination skin), or this new dead sea mineral scrub I’m using twice a week only, or it could be this new method I’m trying I read from some article – washing my face with only water in the morning so basically I only use a foam cleanser at night. These are all really great! I love learning about all of the different things that can cause acne.. because that makes it so much easier to eliminate them and keep acne from forming in the first place. While there are a ton of things that can cause it, it is easier to prevent than to get rid of it, at least with respect to the health of the rest of your skin. Knowing that cell phones can cause acne will help people remember to clean their phones, which build up a ton of dirt and germs.
